Covid Budget Help!

August 12, 2020

Times are tough all over the world at the moment with Covid and well it has never been a better time to budget and plan for the money that is coming in. So many people have lost their jobs and many households are living off one income or on welfare.

I must say we are blessed as our household still has 2 incomes coming in but I wanted to plan for the what if moments and get some savings away just incase. Don’t get me wrong I am lucky that we do have 2 incomes but we have some debt, which this year it is my goal to get it all paid off and stop paying the bank interest. While I am paying off debt I am also putting weekly amounts away in savings and also the new car fund. I must say I have never really adulted to much with the finances and well always found it a little boring. All the paper work and number crunching just made me actually avoid doing a budget or sticking to it. I guess if it is not fun and creative I am just not into it, so I made a colourful budget planner, put some pretty pictures on it and stuck it on my fridge. Looking at it a few times a day well made me like it a lot more and well I started planning a lot more and thinking more about my budget.

When Lockdown started and I had to plan ahead a bit more, had the children at home and also had more household costs I really started to budget everything. Having the children at home sure was a added expense in itself. Thinking about money more I starting looking online for free budget planning or budget calculators and I come across this Website PiglyPigly is a free website that has a huge range of calculators and finance interactive tools to help you fine tune your budget and really plan ahead.

First I started with the savings calculator https://pigly.com/savings/ this helped me quickly and easily what amount I needed to put away each week to reach my goal for a car upgrade. Next I moved onto the loan calculator https://pigly.com/loan/ to work out how much quicker I could pay it off and at what costs. What I really like about this Website is it is actually fun and really easy to use, I must admit I started having fun and working my way more through this site and finding what else I could budget. I also really liked the extra information in each section and how you can fine tune any calculator to your needs.

I am a middle aged mother but I still want things to be fun and easy and this website was a clear winner for me. I even got stuck playing the free game at the bottom of website whenever my brain was hurting from to much budgeting and needed a break https://pigly.com/play/piggy-bank-adventure/ . My teenage son also liked playing this and I even got him using a calculator to work out his pay checks. I also caught him playing around with some calculators working out some budgeting for some computer items he wants to buy. After I worked out my weekly budget I started looking into our Mortgage https://pigly.com/mortgage/ and Credit card debt https://pigly.com/credit-cards/, the 2 things I really wanted to get on top of. Well more I wanted the credit cards paid off by end of the year, I must say when I started using the calculators I stuck to my budget and was kicking my goals.

After a few months I started being ahead of my budget and paying off more money to the credit cards. I put this down to I had finally found my budget and money crunching a bit of fun. I started looking forward to sitting down and jumping on this website to see how much more I could save and pay off and now a few months down the track things are definitely looking up. One thing I found really useful was the Paycheck calculator https://pigly.com/budget/paycheck.php so I could always be planning ahead, I even got my partner using it to tell me his total so I could fine tune to budget.

Well I really thought I would never say this but I feel like I am fully adulting now and never thought I would get so excited about budgeting. I must say I really do feel in control of my money and where it goes now and so much less likely to waste money. The one tool that really helped my partner was the Quit smoking calculator https://pigly.com/budget/smoking-cost.php and I am proud to say he has fully given up smoking and the money is now going in our new car fund. I think really seeing how much he could save monthly to yearly shocked him out of smoking and was that extra kick he needed as he had already cut down heaps. The tool that helped me the most do those little savings was the lunch calculator https://pigly.com/budget/brown-bag-savings.php. I was buying lunch a few days a week and well did not think much of it but once I started crunching those numbers and what I could save, I started packing my lunch daily and well once or twice a month yes I treat myself to a purchased lunch.

That extra money now goes on my credit card which I must say is half of what it was when I started using this website. This best part about this Website of course is it’s free and well very useful. Anyone can use this from young to old and I must say I find it really appealing to anyone who thought budgets where boring. I love finding things that really give you value and help you in life. I highly recommend this site and with so many handy calculators like Loans, Credit cards, Bills, Mortgage, Savings, Debt, Vehicle and even ones for your Business. Why not sort out your budget today or just jump on over to Pigly to see what tools could help you, I am sure you will be impressed. Maybe just maybe get a little addicted like me, hey at least this addiction has paid off.
